I recently watched a video that raised a question many people in the creative industry are already thinking about: if AI can now generate websites, mobile apps, UI layouts, branding and visuals almost instantly, does design still have value?
AI is becoming extremely capable, and in many cases the output is no longer obviously “AI-generated”. It can already create work that looks perfectly acceptable at first glance.
What has AI actually changed?
The biggest change is at the execution level.
Today, AI can rapidly generate website layouts, UI concepts, brand directions, visual assets and even working code. That means a certain type of design work is becoming easier, faster and cheaper.
This does not mean design is dead. It means the barrier to producing something that looks “good enough” has dropped dramatically.
So where does the real value of design sit?
From our experience working on real digital projects, the biggest website problems are rarely simply that a page does not look beautiful enough.
More often, the problems are:
- unclear structure
- confusing user journeys
- weak content hierarchy
- unclear messaging
- generic experiences that look like everyone else
AI can help generate layouts based on familiar patterns. But the harder questions remain: Why should the experience work this way? What problem are we solving? What should users understand or do next? What makes this brand different?
Those questions are where design still creates real value.
What does this shift mean for businesses?
Template-level design is becoming increasingly accessible, and in some cases almost free. Naturally, value moves elsewhere.
Clients are less likely to pay simply for the number of pages produced or whether a layout looks polished. They are paying for clarity, structure, strategy, decision-making and the ability to turn business objectives into an experience that works.
Do businesses still need designers?
Yes, but the role is changing.
If a business only needs a conventional, template-style website, AI-assisted tools may increasingly be enough.
But if the goal is to create a digital experience that is strategically considered, logically structured, distinctive to the brand and designed around real users, experienced designers are still essential.
The valuable designer of the future is not simply a template designer. It is someone who can define the problem, make decisions, connect business and user needs, and direct technology toward the right outcome.
In short
Design is not dead.
AI is simply making ordinary, template-level execution less valuable.
And as that happens, the parts of design that require thinking, judgement, strategy and originality become even more important.
- User Journey 混亂
- Content Hierarchy
Template Level
Designer?
