There is no universally “best” website platform. The right choice depends on what the website needs to do, who will manage it, how distinctive it needs to feel and how much flexibility the organisation expects in the future.

When Webflow makes sense

Webflow is particularly effective for marketing-led websites where visual control, responsive design and fast content management matter. It allows designers and developers to create highly polished experiences while giving internal teams a relatively approachable CMS.

For small to medium corporate sites, campaign sites and brand-led experiences, it can provide an excellent balance between speed and customisation.

The trade-off is platform dependency and limits around highly bespoke backend functionality. If the website starts behaving more like a software product, another architecture may be more appropriate.

When WordPress makes sense

WordPress has an enormous ecosystem and is familiar to many organisations. It can support everything from simple publishing sites to substantial corporate platforms.

Its flexibility is also the source of some complexity. Plugin selection, maintenance, security and editor experience need to be managed carefully. A heavily customised WordPress implementation is very different from installing a theme and a collection of plugins.

When custom development makes sense

Custom development becomes valuable when requirements cannot comfortably fit inside an off-the-shelf platform: unusual workflows, integrations, complex search, interactive tools, data processing or product-like functionality.

Technology should follow strategy. Starting a project with “we want WordPress” or “we want Webflow” before defining requirements can create unnecessary constraints.

For some businesses, a carefully adapted template is the smartest investment. For others, the website is important enough to justify a completely bespoke experience. The right answer is the one that supports the business without paying for complexity it does not need.
