UX and UI are often used together, but they describe different parts of the design process. Understanding the distinction is useful because a website can have excellent UI and poor UX, or strong UX wrapped in an uninspiring interface.

What is UX design?

User experience design focuses on how something works for the person using it. It considers goals, behaviours, information architecture, journeys, navigation, interaction logic and usability.

For a website, UX questions include: Can users find what they need? Is the structure understandable? What happens after they click? Are we asking for unnecessary information? Is the most important action obvious?

What is UI design?

User interface design focuses on how the experience is visually and interactively expressed. It includes typography, colour, spacing, components, buttons, imagery, states, responsive behaviour and motion.

Good UI creates hierarchy and personality while making the underlying UX easier to understand.

A simple example

Imagine a transport app. UX determines how users search for a route, understand arrival information and move between journey planning and destination content. UI determines how those actions are presented visually and how clearly users can interpret them.

In our Hong Kong Tramways app, the experience brings together real-time arrivals, route planning, audio tours and shopping. The interface needs to make those different functions feel like one coherent journey.

Why businesses often confuse them

Visual design is easier to see. During reviews, stakeholders naturally react to colours, images and layouts. But many expensive website problems originate earlier: unclear requirements, weak content hierarchy or a journey that has not been thought through.

UX without UI is not enough

Usability alone does not create a memorable brand experience. People form impressions quickly, and visual craft affects credibility, emotion and perceived quality.

UI without UX is not enough either

A beautiful interface can still hide important information, create unnecessary steps or leave users unsure what to do next.

The strongest digital design combines both

UX gives the experience logic. UI gives that logic clarity and character. Treating them as connected disciplines allows a website or product to be useful, intuitive and distinctive at the same time.

UX Design?

UI Design?

包括 Typography、Colour、Spacing、Component、Button、Imagery、State、Responsive Behaviour 及 Motion。
